Preparing for Moving Day!

Did you know that moving is commonly listed as one of the top 5 most stressful life events? Whether you’ve sold your home or found a new apartment, that means one thing…it’s time to move!  Most people have resigned themselves to believing it’s going to be a nightmare - but it doesn’t have to be!  

We’ve compiled a timeline with a small “TO DO” list to make your next move a breeze.  Check out our recommendations for how to handle your next move like a pro!
1 MONTH OUT:

  • FINALIZE YOUR MOVING DATE.  Whether it’s a real estate closing or an apartment lease, chances are you have some sort of timeline that will give you a rough idea of your moving date. Most moving companies can give you an estimate without knowing the date, but it’s helpful when checking on availability.
 
  • FINALIZE YOUR TIMELINE.  Do you need temporary storage?  Do you need the moving company to hold your items on the truck overnight?  Are you staying local or moving far away?  Let your moving company know all these details up front - it helps us give you an accurate estimate!​

  • GET MOVING ESTIMATES.  If possible, reach out 3-4 weeks in advance to get moving estimates.  It will take some time to gather and compare the quotes.  Make sure to check each company's reviews on Google, Yelp and Facebook.  Check out MOVE INDY'S reviews HERE.​

  • LOCK-IN THE DATE. We recommend booking your moving company 2-3 weeks prior to your move date.  During the busy summer months, we recommend 4 weeks notice to secure your preferred date & time.  Each company is different, but you should be prepared to pay some form of a deposit. 
MOVE INDY requires minimal deposits for local moves! 
And while we love advance notice, we can often accommodate last-minute requests.

  • PURCHASE PACKING SUPPLIES.   There’s no way around it - if you need to move, then you need to purchase packing materials.  Make sure to purchase plenty of boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and packing paper well in advance.  While it’s tempting to use the free boxes from the grocery store, it’s not always best.  These boxes are often in poor condition, and because they are not a uniform size they do not stack as nicely on the truck.  This ultimately costs you more money, as it takes longer to arrange the items on the truck (not to mention any possible damages due to boxes collapsing).

2-3 WEEKS OUT:

  • SCHEDULE CLEANINGS.  Moving takes a toll not only on you, but on your house, as well!  We all have those large furniture pieces we haven’t cleaned behind in years!  Did you know most real estate contracts require that you leave the home in ready condition for the next owner? And most rental leases require you to clean in order to receive your deposit back.  When you have to clean, MOVE INDY can help!​

  • START PACKING.  You can never start too soon!  Packing always takes longer than you think, so we recommend starting as soon as possible.  Remember that any loose items should be packed in boxes or totes before being placed on the truck.  Leaving items loose on the truck makes them more susceptible to damage.  

Here are a few key items to remember to pack in boxes:
  • Table lamps
  • Lamp shades (from table lamps AND floor lamps!)
  • Countertop appliances
  • Printers
  • Kids’ toys
  • Garage Items
  • Also remember to bring all items down from the attic or any other special hiding places!

MOVE INDY also recommends labeling your boxes ON ALL SIDES (color-coding the boxes also works extremely well)!  This will speed up the moving process, which ultimately saves you money.  Make sure it is extremely clear which boxes go to which locations!

  • PURGE.  Now is the perfect time to get rid of the items you don’t want to take with you!  MOVE INDY offers Junk Removal Service that can be combined with your move!  If you let us know which items you want to dispose of, we will provide you with an estimate to remove these items during your move.

1 WEEK OUT:

  • SCHEDULE YOUR UTILITIES.  If you haven’t already, make sure to transfer utilities into your name at your new residence.  It’s not fun trying to move boxes in the dark (trust us, we know!).  Also make sure that the utilities at your CURRENT residence will still be active at the time of your move (see the note above re: moving in the dark!).
 
  • CHECK ON PARKING.  This is especially important if you are moving to/from an apartment complex, anywhere downtown, or any place where parking is tight!  Please make sure we can fit our 26’ box truck as close to your home as possible.  Be sure to make any special arrangements or requests in advance.  Notify MOVE INDY if there are any concerns.
 
  • PROTECT YOUR PETS! As stressful as moving can be for us humans, it’s even more so for our pets!  MOVE INDY recommends making arrangements to have them secured or go on a “mini vacation” during the big move day.  Pet Spa, anyone?!?
 
  • PREPARE YOUR OUTDOOR ITEMS.  Remember, any gas-powered equipment (mowers, snow blowers, weed whackers, etc.) must have the gas tanks emptied before going on the truck.  Also plan to transport propane tanks yourself - most moving companies will not allow them on the truck.  Be sure to box up any loose garage items!  Check out our full list of Frequently Asked Questions HERE.
THE DAY OF THE MOVE:

  • REPRESENT! Plan to be present for the entire move.  It is extremely important that there is an onsite point-of-contact for the movers. This should be someone with decision-making authority.  If for some reason you can not be present on move day, designate someone 18 years of age or older to stand in your place.  This person should be capable of directing the movers where to place items, answer any questions that may arise, and be able to sign the final paperwork (including billing information).
 
  • CLEAR THE PATH. Be sure to clear the pathway between the truck and the loading/unloading areas.  If you are moving in the winter, be sure your driveways and walkways are clear of ice and snow.  We recommend shoveling and putting down salt well in advance of the mover's arrival window.
 
  • PROTECT YOUR PERISHABLES!  Make a plan to move your perishable items, including food and beverages.  MOVE INDY does not transport liquids on our truck (this also includes cleaning products!).  We require freezers to be defrosted 48 hours in advance.  Be sure to have a plan in place for these items!
 
  • SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST!  Reserve 1 or 2 boxes with your “must have” items for the new place (bedding, change of clothes, toiletries, etc.).  Plan to transport these items in your personal vehicle, or have the movers place it at the back of the truck.  This way you’ll be able to find your essential items when you start unpacking at your new home!

  • AND LAST (BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST)...RELAX!  You hired MOVE INDY, so you know your moving day is going to be a breeze!  We will arrive with the appropriate number of trucks, manpower and equipment to complete your job safely.  We have background checked and personally trained all our employees, so we know you’re going to have excellent service!  Lastly, take comfort in knowing that we are a professional moving company that is licensed, bonded and insured.  You are hiring a professional company that knows how to do things the right way!
